Brief Tips

Sep 15, 2005

This month's hand occurred on Aug 28 in the qualifying round of the New England Peer Tournament Consolation in Auburn MA.   My opponent Ken Patenaude, an ACC Master and I are both at hole 95.

I hold A diamonds 4 spade 7 clubs 8 diamonds 9 clubs. Q spades

Ken's objective is to maximize his pegging and advance as closely as possible to the game hole after this deal.

I discard AD and QS to Ken's crib.   After a 6 spades starter, the play proceeded as follows:

     13 29-1 15-2 31-8
     9 diamonds 7 Diamonds 8 spades 8 hearts
 4 Spades 9 clubs 7 clubs 8 diamonds
 4 22-2 7 23-2

Ken commented on my pairing his 9 as "a gutsy play" and after some analysis played his 7D laying a clever trap.   I analyzed this hand using VIEW - WIN/LOSS which revealed that leading the 7C in the second series was the percentage play, and in the first series as well.

With this win, Ken easily qualified and won the Consolation.
