Microsoft Windows Explorer Tutor

 


Use WINDOWS EXPLORER to locate files in folders, modify how the files are displayed, and copy from one folder to another.

Known folder name and file name:
  • Microsoft WINDOWS EXPLORER - XP
    • click START at bottom left hand corner of screen
    • pop-up window appears, move mouse to ALL PROGRAMS
    • new pop-up window appears, move mouse to ACCESSORIES
    • another pop-up window appears, move mouse to and click WINDOWS EXPLORER
    • all pop-up windows close, WINDOWS EXPLORER window opens
    • main menu OPTIONS and ICONS, FOLDERS, and NAME panes appear
  • Microsoft WINDOWS EXPLORER - Vista
    • click Windows Vista icon at bottom left hand corner of screen
    • pop-up window appears, move mouse to COMPUTER and click
    • WINDOWS EXPLORER window opens showing drives and letters
      • navigation example - to launch HALSCRIB program
      • move mouse to main LOCAL DISK and click
      • move mouse to PROGRAM FILES folder and click
      • move mouse to CRIBBAGE folder and click
      • move mouse to HALSCRIB folder and click
      • move mouse to HALSCRIB program and double-click
  • WEBCLUB Folder
    • locate and click MY COMPUTER, all drive letters appear
    • click LOCAL DISK, FOLDERS pane appears
    • click PROGRAM FILES folder, subfolders of PROGRAM FILES appear
    • click CRIBBAGE then HALSCRIB subfolder; HALSCRIB and support files appear
  • FOLDER OPTIONS
    • in main EXPLORER window, click TOOLS menu option
    • TOOLS drop-down list opens
    • click FOLDER OPTIONS ..., TOOLS drop-list closes
    • FOLDER OPTIONS window opens, GENERAL tab appears
    • click VIEW tab, GENERAL tab disappears, VIEW tab appears
    • click-check FULL PATH
    • click-uncheck HIDE KNOWN TYPES
    • click OK, FOLDER OPTIONS window closes
  • VIEW DETAILS
    • in main EXPLORER window, click VIEW menu option
    • VIEW drop-down list opens
    • click CHOOSE DETAILS, drop-down list closes
    • CHOOSE DETAILS window opens
  • CHOOSE DETAILS
    • click-check NAME
    • click-check TYPE
    • click-check SIZE
    • click-check DATES
    • click OK, CHOOSE DETAILS WINDOW closes
    • in VIEW drop-down list, click DETAILS
    • in VIEW drop-down list, click REFRESH
    • drop-down list closes
    • file names, types, and date times appear in Files pane
Unknown or incomplete file and/or folder name:
  • SEARCH FILES and FOLDERS
    • proceed as in Microsoft WINDOWS EXPLORER screen shot
    • click SEARCH icon, SEARCH COMPANION pane opens
    • click ALL FILES AND FOLDERS, SEARCH COMPANION pane changes
  • SEARCH SUBFOLDERS
    • type ZIP in ALL OR PART NAME pane
    • click down button of TYPE OF FILE pane, drop-down list opens
    • click (ALL FILES AND FOLDERS), drop-down list closes
    • click double-down arrow button of MORE ADVANCED OPTIONS pane
    • advanced options check list opens
    • click-check SEARCH SUBFOLDERS, click-uncheck others
    • click SEARCH button, searching begins
  • FILE NAMES
    • EXPLORER window replaced by SEARCH RESULTS window
    • note file name and folder location
    • to re-open EXPLORER window, click FOLDERS icon
    • or, double-click ZIP file located to run WINZIP
Copy one or more files in one folder to another.
  • LOCATE SOURCE FOLDER
    • proceed as above to locate the desired file in some source folder
    • move the mouse to the desired file
    • right-click the desired file
    • move the mouse to the COPY drop-down menu option
    • click (left-click) to copy the file onto Windows invisible "clipboard"
  • LOCATE DESTINATION FOLDER
    • proceed as above to locate the desired file in some destination folder
    • move the mouse to an empty area of the Files pane
    • right-click the mouse
    • move the mouse to the PASTE drop-down menu option
    • click (left-click) to copy the file from the "clipboard" to the destination folder
  • CONFIRM FILE REPLACE
    • move the mouse to the YES button
    • click the mouse
    • move the mouse to the PASTE drop-down menu option
    • click (left-click) to copy the file from the "clipboard" to the destination folder
