b.1883 (timeline) England d.1953 Canada (at age 70), m.
Millicent
(Amelia or Millie) BATES, b.1885, England d.1955 Canada (at age 70). Both are resting at
White Chapel Memorial Gardens cemetery in Hamilton, Ontario.
Amelia's parents were Albert (a Shoemaker) b._d._ and Martha (b.1886 d.1928) BATES
had 6 children named Laura, b.1866, Martha, b. 1868, Annie, b. 1875, Albert,
b.1878, Harry b.1882, Millicent (above Amelia or Millie ) b.1885 and Eva b.1888.
Alfred immigrated to Canada 1906 (age 23). He
returned to England in 1914 to visit and bring Millie to Canada. They were
married in Toronto on May 16, 1914 (start of WW1).
Alfred was a tool
and die maker probably through his father insistence that all of his sons follow
in his footsteps. Alfred worked in Toronto possibly for a firm
that was building the Welland Canal, Jack (b.1915), Bill (b.1916), and Edna (b.1919)
born during the time. The family moved to
Varna, in southern Ontario (near Goderich) to open a new business partnership making engines. The business failed and they
relocated to Clinton (still near Goderich), where Irene (b.1921) was born. Moved again to Egmondville
(by Seaforth) in 1924 and may have worked in a furniture factory. Settled
in Hamilton in 1928 - at 119 Markland
Street (Frank b.1931) then to119 Homewood in 1935. He worked in the town
of Dundas at John Bertran and Sons (a foundry). Alfred died on Christmas
eve
1953, at 69 years of age, and had been in Hamilton for 24 years. He was
active in the Scouting movement, a captain in the St. Johns Ambulance and secretary
of local 414 AFL International Association of Machinists.
