Hats off to the provincial government for bringing to light the ludicrous fact that all renters, especially low income renters, have been paying taxes at a rate four times higher than the average home owner.
Local government now has an opportunity to spur rental downtown and give landlords and tenants some much deserved property tax relief.
Regional and local governments should put aside their own self interests and find bold and innovative solutions that will benefit renters throughout the region of Hamilton-Wentworth.
A single taxing authority funding a unified work force and administration that is able and equipped for the challenges that lay ahead would be a good start.
If local government is unwilling or unable to correct this injustice, they will give renters a good reason to get out and vote.
