WHITTLE TO RUN FOR TRUSTEE

The Mountain News (Hamilton)
The early bird may get the worm, but the early political candidate gets to ...wait a long time.
But that fact doesn't seem to bother Hamilton mountain resident Mark Alan Whittle. Mr. Whittle will be "the first one in line" Jan. 2, 2003 to sign up to run in Hamilton's civic elections in November.
People angry at the local political scene, or interested in contributing to Hamilton's future can officially apply at the city clerk's office at city hall to run in this year's municipal elections.
Mr. Whittle, fed up with how Hamilton's public school board is operating, will be running for a trustee's position in ward 7 against current trustee Lillian Orban.
"This is my chance to make a difference," said Mr. Whittle. Mr. Whittle, a well-known political activist, has run previously for city council. But over the summer Mr. Whittle gain some notoriety when the education assistants at the public school board went out on strike. Mr. Whittle's son, Logan, receives help from education assistants.
The experience galvanized Mr. Whittle's social activism and encouraged him to run for the school board.
Another factor in his decision was the fact Mrs. Orban was acclaimed in the last election.
"I can't allow that to happen again," he said. "Politicians need competition. This is a democracy. That shouldn't happen."
