Adult Book:
Ross Poldark & Demelza -By Winston Graham
1946
The first two in a series of eleven books, Winston
Graham's historical novels follow the fortunes of the Poldark
family in late 18th century Cornwall, England.
Ross Poldark arrives home from the war
in America to find his sweetheart engaged to his cousin, his
father dead and his estate in ruins. Feeling betrayed by those
of his own social standing, Ross keeps company with a host of
colourful characters including; fishers, smugglers, tin miners
and farmers.
These books are thoroughly enjoyable,
even if you are not Cornish!

Children's Book:
The Little White Horse -By Elizabeth Goudge
1946
This is the story of how a young woman, a cat,
a lion, a hare and a unicorn re-unite a pair of long lost lovers
and save Moonacre Manor from the wicked Black Men.
Re-reading this book always brings me
a very pleasant sense of well-being. Perhaps it is the sweet,
simple characters or maybe it is all the descriptions of wonderful
food!
Certainly by the time the story is over
there remains not "...a drop of hatred in any heart nor
a crumb of bitterness in any mind."
