Waxed Paper Butterfly
Materials:
- waxed paper
- crayon sharpener
- construction paper
- clothes iron
- old crayon bits
Ever wish you could find a good use for
those leftover, stubby bits of crayon with all the paper peeled
off (which every kid seems to create in abundance). Well, here
it is.
Have your children take those leftover
crayons and sharpen them in a crayon sharpener until nothing remains
but bits of wax. Keep the different colours separate.
Cover your work surface with a large sheet
of paper. Draw a rough outline of a large butterfly on the paper.
Cover the outline with sheets of waxed paper.
Have
the kids sprinkle the crayon shavings on the waxed paper within
the butterfly outline. Get creative with designs and shapes.
Next, cover the waxed paper with another
waxed paper sheet of equal size, so that the crayon shavings are
sandwiched. Run a very cool iron, minimum heat setting, over the
waxed paper. The crayon wax will melt and fuse with the wax on
the paper. Allow paper to cool and stiffen.
Cut out your butterfly wings, add a head
and thorax and hang in the window. You can make any shape or design
you fancy. Great for Easter designs. Happy sprinkling.
