Pumpkin Scarecrows

Constructing a pumpkin scarecrow is an October tradition at our house.

The Body

We start with a wooden frame which consists of three 2x4s nailed together to form an 'n' shape. This frame is propped up on the garden bench inside the waistband of an old pair of pants. We stuff the pant legs with newspapers and we drape a jacket around the scarecrow's "shoulders". Gloves, a scarf and more newspaper padding round out the body of our pumpkin person. If you are using newspaper as stuffing, crumple the pages into plastic grocery bags and tie them shut. When it rains your scarecrow won't get soggy.

The Head

Several large nails project up through the top of the wooden frame and once the scarecrow is dressed we impail a pumpkin on the nails to form a head. We then skewer a wig and/or hat to the top of the pumpkin. Facial features are either carved out, drawn or we use the plastic eyes and nose from an old "Mr. Potato Head" game.
