How to make flower of rose from sheet metal
Link to home page

Rose is very meaningful flower and metal will only multiply weight of flower’s significance. Please keep in mind that metal Rose will require special attention for care; it may have sharp edges and thorns. To assemble souvenir you may need some traditional and also modified tools. About 1½ sq. feet of sheet metal must be enough. Simple way to get material for the project is to recycle tin can or aluminium foil dish. Then only common scissors and a glue gun are needed to make the flower. If you have access to MIG or TIG welding machine then it's better to get hot rolled, mild or low carbon steel (not galvanized) or stainless steel in 22 – 26 gauge sheets. Small amounts of this material can be found in specialized metal supermarkets or in auto body repair shops. There are two vital aspects of choosing right material for the project: 1 - metal must be soft and can be cut with aviation snips; 2 - metal must have good plasticity for easy bending without heating.
Note, plastic properties of metal usually can be improved after annealing.

If material is chosen then cut
first "special" petal (a).

Hold first petal in modified*
pliers and ...
*Nose of the pliers must be formed
into the shape of a cone with near
about 35° angle at the top.
... bend it all around the
instrument to make a cone.
Cut edges of the cone
to close up the opening.
This is basic element
of the flower.

Prepear five "cover" petals (c).
If you attach "cover" petals to
previously formed element
you might get baby bud.
Set up welding machine to the lowest
level of heat and use very short
tacks, almost a spot welding.
Wire clamps can be useful for
holding parts of the flower.
First clamp shown here may help
you to hold one of last petals on fully
open flower head
Cut"regular" petals.
If you need help with templates or
all pre-cut and pre-bend parts for
your flower please
contact site owner.
Each 3 or 5 additional petals
must be slitly bigger in size.
For fully developed flower
25 - 30 petals may be
needed.
Bottom part of the petal
can be formed in dapping set or
by hammer with rounded head.
Top part of the petal
can be formed on a piece
of pipe or round bar.

Flat nose pliers can be used for
bending petal's edges.
Shown here special pliers
are very convinient tool
for bending petals.
Attach additional petals one by one
to form flower in different stages
of development.
By keeping all petals
close together you might get
tight bud.
Allow some gaps between petals
and you will get open flower head.
Make leafs.
Pay attention to edges and
surface of the leaf.
Finishing details can be done
with cutting disk of rotary tool,
modified aviation snips,
special dies for vise or
just a chisel and file.
Use round bar to prepare stem.
Make top section the stem (few inches
in length) a bit smaller in diameter.
Also, bend bar slightly along its line.
Thorns or better to say prickles are
important details of the stem. They
can be formed from welding tacks.
For assistance with your project
you can order kit for welding:
36 all pre-cut and pre-bent petals,
12" stem with prickles or thorns,
9 leafs, material for branches
and few wire clamps.

You may also order main parts of
the flower or finished souvenir itself.

To assemble the flower attach
first its head to the stem and
add extra material into the joint
to forrm body of the fruit.
Then attach branches with leafs
one by one going down
along the stem.
